Energen Art 2011 - part 2!

Here's the other painting I have in the Energen Art Show in Birmingham. The show runs through this Sunday, March 27. I'll have to miss the reception this year because I'll be teaching a workshop. The reception is always fantastic! The people, the food, the art...all are great. It's almost like a reunion of Alabama artist friends.
I am looking forward to teaching this workshop, though! I can't wait to meet the students who have signed up and I'm eager to teach them - hopefully something new & encouraging! Have a great week, everyone!

Energen Art Show 2011

This is one of 2 pieces I entered in this year's Energen Art Show in Birmingham. Thankfully, they both got in the show and I'm looking forward to it! It opens on March 14th if you're in the area and can stop by the Energen Building in downtown Birmingham!
I've been trying hard to capture the light in the sky and this painting, "The Edge of Light", is one of my more recent efforts. Coming up with names is hard for me! My friend and photographer of my art, Robert Fouts, and I came up with this name together...although we both thought it sounded like a soap opera!

The Tigers' Trees

Roots go deep down at the corner of Magnolia and College in Auburn, Alabama...and deep in the hearts of the Auburn family is a love for a couple of trees that have brought so much joy to countless people.
This painting was done right after our Auburn Tigers became the National Champions and now they are champions in spirit.
War Eagle!

Winter Blahs Maybe? *SOLD*

I'm posting this painting that I did in the fall using a very limited palette. This one worked, but my experiments with a limited palette this week are failing it seems! I've scraped more canvas and wasted more paint than I have in a long time and I am frustrated!! The middle of winter always leaves me a bit put out and this one is no exception. I'm determined to pull off a good one...or two...this week, though! Back to the easel!!

Workshop with Mark Horton *SOLD*

I attended a workshop by Mark Horton last weekend and had a great time! This is one of the paintings I completed. It was so inspiring and refreshing to get together with a new instructor and fellow artists! I just purchased lots of new canvas and can't wait for it to arrive. I have so many new ideas and look forward to painting, painting, painting! All these ideas I've had in the past with not enough time to see them through are ready to be unleashed!

Today is just the beginning! *SOLD*

Today is truly the first day of the rest of my life! After 13 years working at a bank and working in other fields since I was 14 years old (except for a brief stint as a full-time painter), I will be painting full-time! Dreams do come true!! It is an answered prayer and I am so excited to begin this journey! Painting is my passion and I hope you'll follow me on this blog! Happy New Year everyone! Aim high!!

Here We Go! *SOLD*

Here we go! Tomorrow is December 1st and the race begins for me! I like to wait until after Thanksgiving before I get started with Christmas, but feel slightly panicked that I haven't done anything yet. Oh, well - I guess I work better under pressure! Here's hoping you have a great holiday! If you're looking for some gifts - I've painted several Santas and they're at the Museum Store at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Also, Stonehenge Gallery is having a small works show that opens on Thursday, Dec. 2nd!

Thanksgiving 2010

When I count my blessings, I am amazed at how many there are! Big & small, simple & luxurious - sometimes those blessings don't even look like blessings at all! What a year I've had and I look forward to the day when I gather with my family and thank the One from Whom they come! Happy Thanksgiving, my friends! May you all have a blessed holiday season!

Dimming of the Day

I thought I'd post a sunset as we wind down the lovely month of October. I love this time of year and love to celebrate it by painting pictures that reflect it. In Alabama, it doesn't usually get really cool until November and we have some of the most beautiful sunsets in that month. Anybody know why that is?? Whatever the reason, I can't wait to capture some of that beauty in paint!

Not Far From Home *SOLD*

I painted this piece back in the summer, but it's just been delivered to Stonehenge Gallery. It was painted with a reddish undertone which I hope gives it a little glow. The photo produced a little glare on the left hand side unfortunately. Artist Clark Walker has a show opening at the gallery this Thursday - can't wait to get in there and see all the new art!

May Day *SOLD*

Just when you think no one is reading your blog, someone tells you that they are and it makes your day!! So - I decided to try and post more frequently! This one just took first place at the Montgomery Art Guild-Alabama National Fair Show. It wasn't a plein air painting, but I wanted to paint it as if I was outside by painting quickly with expressive brushwork. It's 11"x14". It was done from a photograph taken in rural Montgomery County.

My friend and fellow artist, Melissa Tubbs, and I are having a show during this month at Clay Scot Artworks in Birmingham. Melissa does incredible pen & ink drawings...you'll be amazed at the beautiful work she does! This 36"x36" painting, "Canopy", is one several large skyscapes I have completed for the show. Hope you can drop by!

Sunset at the Pier *SOLD*

This little tiny painting (about 4"x4") will be on display at the Homewood Small Works Show in Birmingham - the show opens on Friday, 9/24. I can't wait to see this show because I love small works of art. They just draw you in! This was a lot of fun to paint. Painted in oil on Masonite which I love to do because the paint just glides on the surface. I did it from a photo taken at St. Simon's Island, Georgia.

Down to Earth *SOLD*

I made a trip to the Curb Market today and it was packed even on a Tuesday morning! Montgomery loves its Curb Market! I came home loaded with tomatoes, peas and corn. This painting honors the ones who bring this to our tables. Thank you, farmers!!!
